Today's phrase at amusing.org is mine.  I don't think it's one of my better ones. I submitted that way back in 10/23/06. That's a scary backlog.  They better use the one I submitted next.  It's gold, I tell you.

I got my first payment for an illustration job, which is kind of a big deal for me because it wasn't part of my day job.  (I'm a software engineer, remember?)  Luckily there's a good chance more work will be thrown my way from the same contact.  I'll show off the illustration when things are finalized with the client.  By the way, absolutely anyone can ask me for an illustration.  The worst I can say is no.  And I'll do some jobs for pretty cheap.

So, the illustration job was an interesting experience.  I wanted to get it right, so I had it reviewed by others before submitting it. The process made me realize how easy it is to make glaring errors when you look at something too long. When I do any illustration or comic from now on, I'll be sure to put the first draft aside for awhile so I can look at it with a pair of fresh eyes later.  And I'll always have a third party review it to identify things that need improvement. I can easily find comics in my archives that could have benefitted from this process. Man, just look at the father in this strip. He's anatomically craptastic.

Oh yeah, comics. I should do those. Time constraints, my friends. Time constraints.

Today’s amusing.org submission is mine:

THE UNSOLICITED TALES OF INSIDE-OUT MAN

My god, I submitted that in March of 2006 and they just now posted it.

Lately, I can’t seem to stop stressing and life just keeps piling on. (Don’t worry. I won’t get into it and this is meant to be humorous.) So, just now I said to myself (as if praying, I’m embarrassed to admit), “Please let there be a miracle. Please let something go right.” I swear, two seconds later I checked amusing.org and found my submission.  Well, I guess that’s my big miracle. God has grudgingly thrown me the smallest bone he could find. It’s back to Stressville for me!

I finished inking a scene for a long-form comic last night while listening to this particular episode of To the Best of Our Knowledge. They interviewed comedian Jim Gaffigan and played clips of his act. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard him make the SAME DAMN JOKE that I had in my comic. Well, there's no way I'm scrapping that comic.

Speaking of comics, irkworks.com has been pretty dead, hasn't it? I honestly don't know when I'll post another comic. I doubt the long-form comic I mentioned above will appear at irkworks. I might save it and submit it to a publisher instead. Hey, you have your dreams, I have mine (as unrealistic as they may be). So it's too bad about irkworks, considering I already drew up a nifty illustration commemorating the 50th strip. (I only made it to #45 so far.) I have a ton of sketches I will post shortly. Does anyone like the sketches? It doesn't matter; they're being posted.

I mentioned To the Best of Our Knowledge above and I can't recommend it highly enough. Radiolab is another great show. And don't forget This American Life. All are free, and all are a great listen while you draw.

Check it out.

Today's amusing.org entry is mine:

COLONIC PARTY FAVORS
-Crispy

I sent that one in on September 15, 2005. I thought it was one of the worst ones I ever submitted.

I haven't decided what I'm doing in December regarding comics, but I am working on a couple strips that I'll post this month.

I lay claim to today's amusing.org phrase:

NASAL SEX

It's not my best work, but I'll accept its acceptance.
